Dana’s Expert Advice: 5 Wig Mistakes to Avoid

Transitioning to alternative hair is a journey, and if you’re navigating thinning hair or medical hair loss, you want that transition to be seamless. With over 20 years of experience helping women in the Dallas and Rockwall area find their perfect look, I’ve seen it all!

The "perfect wig" isn't just about the hair you buy; it’s about how you wear it. To help you feel confident from day one, I’m sharing my expert advice on the top five mistakes beginners make—and how you can avoid them.

1. Guessing Your Cap Size

Many clients assume wigs are "one size fits all," but a poor fit is the fastest way to feel uncomfortable. A wig that is too small can cause headaches, while one that is too large will shift or create an unnatural "bulge" at the crown.

  • The Expert Fix: Accuracy is everything. Before you buy, take precise measurements of your head circumference. At Wigs by Dana, I specialize in custom fittings to ensure your unit feels as secure as it looks.

2. Placing the Hairline Too Low

This is the most common "tell" for a new wig wearer. It’s tempting to pull the wig forward for more coverage, but placing the hairline too low on the forehead throws off your facial proportions and looks like a hat rather than your own hair.

  • The Expert Fix: Follow the Four-Finger Rule. Your wig’s hairline should generally sit about four fingers' width above your eyebrows, right where your natural hairline would begin. This keeps your look balanced and realistic.

3. Forgetting the Foundation

What’s happening under the wig is just as important as the wig itself. If your natural hair isn't secured flat, your wig will look lumpy. Additionally, for those with sensitive scalps due to medical hair loss, the wrong foundation can cause major irritation.

  • The Expert Fix: Keep it flat! Use a wig liner or a soft bamboo cap to create a smooth surface. If you have natural hair, a flat wrap or fine cornrows work best to keep the silhouette of your head shape appear natural.

  • Keep wig secure: My top picks for ensuring your wig stays in place are the Wig Secure by Amy Gibson and It-Stays. With these products, your wig will remain secure until you're ready to remove it.

4. Using the Wrong Maintenance Products

Standard drugstore shampoos are often too harsh for alternative hair. They can strip the moisture from human hair wigs or permanently damage the delicate fibers of a synthetic unit.

  • The Expert Fix: Invest in professional-grade, sulfate-free products specifically designed for wigs. Whether you have a luxury human hair piece or a high-quality synthetic, the right products will extend the life of your investment by months.

5. Fearing the "Custom Touch"

A wig straight out of the box is just the starting point. Many beginners are afraid to "mess with" their new hair, but a factory-standard part or a blunt hairline can often look a bit too perfect to be real.

  • The Expert Fix: Don’t be afraid to customize! A slight trim to fit your face shape, or adding a touch of concealer to the lace, can make a world of difference.
