.Chemo Hair Loss: Should You Cut Your Hair Before It Starts Falling Out?

Wondering whether to cut your hair before chemo hair loss begins? Learn the pros, emotional considerations, and your options from Wigs by Dana in Rockwall, TX.

The Question I Hear So Often

One of the most common questions I hear from clients preparing for chemotherapy is: Should I go ahead and cut my hair off before I start losing it? My answer is always the same: there is no right or wrong answer. It is a personal decision, and what feels empowering for one person may feel completely different for another.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Answer

Some women prefer to keep their hair as long as possible. In the beginning, often there is so much happening like doctor appointments, treatment decisions, questions, schedules and emotions—that hair loss may not be the first thing you're wanting to think about. If you still have your hair, looking in the mirror can also provide a sense of normalcy during a time when so much feels unfamiliar.

Why Hair Length Can Make a Difference

Hair loss can feel very different depending on your hair length

For those with shorter hair, the early signs of hair loss may feel more subtle — but for women with longer hair, the experience can be deeply emotional.

For women with longer hair, seeing more strands than usual — in the shower or on your pillow — can feel especially overwhelming. The experience is the same, but longer strands simply make each stage of the journey more visible.

For Some Women, Cutting Early Feels Empowering

Some clients choose to cut their hair short or shave their head before significant shedding begins. For them, making that decision can feel empowering. It can be a way of saying, “I am choosing how I want to handle this.” It is not about giving up—it can be about taking control of one small part of an experience that can otherwise feel completely outside your control.

For Others, Waiting Feels Right

Other women simply aren't ready to let go of their hair yet, and that is perfectly okay. You do not have to cut your hair before chemotherapy. You can wait and see how you feel. There is no deadline, and there is no prize for doing it sooner. Give yourself permission to make the decision when you are emotionally ready.

When the Shedding Starts

What I have found through working with clients experiencing chemotherapy hair loss is that the decision can sometimes change once shedding actually begins. You may know intellectually that hair loss is coming, but seeing your hair everywhere can make the experience feel much more real. For some women, that is the moment when shaving or cutting the remaining hair becomes freeing. They are able to say, in their own way, “This hair does not have control over me. I am going to take charge of what I can.”

You Don't Have to Do This Alone

If you already have a salon or stylist you trust, talk with them. They may be able to help you decide what feels comfortable and give you a haircut that makes the transition easier. Having someone you know and trust beside you can make an emotional moment feel a little less overwhelming.
